I went higher into the mountains a few days ago (August 16) and took photos of three nice Tachinid flies. When I got home I compared them with Internet photos, and it looks to me like maybe all three are in the same genus, Archytas. I hope someone can confirm that, or correct me. First, fly #1, she (?) is feeding on the wildflower Yarrow. Stephen attached the following image: [85.19Kb] Edited by Stephen on 19-08-2006 17:09 --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

Here is fly number 2, she (?) was just resting on the ground surrounded by pebbles.

The third one was on low plants alongside the Blackwater River, a small stream. Are all three of these flies females, or do male Tachinids just not have eyes set close together? Stephen attached the following image: [84.36Kb] --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

Well, they're all tachinids ... and they *look* similar to my specimens of Archytas here but I couldn't go much further than that |
