I found this one on the wet edge of a large pond in the moutains. Length was 5.4 mm, and the date 18 August 2006. I first thought of Lonchopteridae, but maybe 5.4 mm is too big for that family? Interesting that the eyes seem to have short, white hairs on them. Any ID guidance would be appreciated! Dolichopodidae. Hydrophorus or something related.

Everything says Hydrophorus; the place, the microhabitat, the time and of course the fly itself. IIRC Hydrophorus has some 50 species is North America. They've been recently revised, but identification to species level is probably impossible from a photo for most species. Kahis |
