Hi,
Recently I took some photos of a small black fly that were all of (semi)bad quality, here are the best ones. As to black calliphorids, I know Morinia doronici and Melanomyia nana only. The first doesn't fit, and I am afraid neither does the second. Melanomyia seldom folds its wings that way (well, that might not be important), and in my fly the wing veins look infuscated (or is it a matter of the light?). However, I cannot remember that Melanomyia has short hairs between the thorax bristles. So I'd like to ask for help!
Many thanks, Sundew

I have had a look, and I think it is a male Morinia doronici : the bristle arrangement on scutellum does fit as for the infuscation of wings. I think we can guess also the band of whitish dusting across the pleurae (from katepisternum to notopleural depression).
I can be wrong of course...
Stephane.

When I took the photos, I thought: another Morinia male. On the screen, however, they raised my doubts. Till now I had only dorsal views of males (that always sat flat to the ground) and never seen the abdomen. As the abdomen of females is short-haired and shiny I did not expect the males to be thus hairy! This was probably a wrong train of thought, smooth females and hairy males are obviously widespread Grin.
Ok, Morinia then. Many thanks.

I agree with Stephane.
Melanomyia has smaller apical scutellars and less darkened wings.
It tricked me, though.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
