Hylemya or Hydrophoria. I would guess Hylemya because I can't see hairs between the acrostichal bristles and I can't see the lower squama projecting. Hylemya urbica maybe? But Hydrophoria ruralis looks similar too. The experts will tell you if I'm talking rubbish!

Stephen.

You are not talking rubbish Stephen R, as that is exactly the answer I would give. It would be easy if one had the specimen to hand. Unfortunately one can't see the acrostichals, disc of scutellum, lower calypter. Hylemya variata might be a good guess.

Thanks Michael. I found that if you click on the photo it enlarges and you can see a bit more.

In the enlarged photo the hind tibia look as if there is a trace of orange i.e. not entirely black. This points to Hylemya urbica male. It is either urbica or variata, I can't be certain. The genitalia of these two species are very different, so for a definite det you need the specimen

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
