Any indication of size ? If it is 10-11 mm., it might very wellbe the male of Tabanus maculicornis. If it is bigger than 15 mm. it must be something els. Theo |

Hello Theo, Axel and me think that this fly was much bigger than 15 mm, maybe 20 mm. We both saw it at the same time from 2-3 m ago, sitting on the ground. But this informations make the determination not easier, as I think. Thanks Edited by Kirsten Eta on 05-02-2010 11:00 Friendly regards Kirsten |

Estimates without measurements are very unreliable, in my experience, often off by a factor of 2. 20 mm is bigger than the biggest Syrphid, to give a reference. . Anyway, I don't think it will be able to suggest a name with some credibility. Theo |
