Hello to all! I found this syrphids at the Plaza Grande in Quito, Ecuador. Ab. 8mm, 6.8.2009, about 2850m asl. Does anyone know their family or more? Rupert Huber attached the following image: [157.53Kb] Best greetings Rupert |

Thanks a lot, Menno! How do you identify this genus? To me, these flies look totally different from this one: http://www.dipter...d_id=25403, that you identified as Dolichogyna, too. Best greetings Rupert |

To me, it looks a bit like our genus Syritta |

The combination of the following characters leads you to Dolichogyna: cell R1 open, vein R4+5 strongly sinuate, ocellar triangle very wide. Additional characters are the pollinose vittae on the mesonotum and the swollen hind femora. Yes, both species look quite different from each other! |

Thanks, Menno, for this information! I'm gonna try to apply this when dealing with my other Ecuadorian hoverflies, so that I can post them here perhaps already with a guess.
Best greetings Rupert |
