Iīm checking itīs species and I found something difficult for me; itīs among C. arcuatum and C. festivum - 1935: Lindnerīs book keys them as different but says in C. festivumīs description itīs a possible synonym of C. arcuatum - 2002: Spanish checklist records C. arcuatum but not festivum - 2004: van Veenīs keysī book sets them as 2 species, but like this: -- C. arcuatum (=C. fasciatum auctorum) -- C. festivum (=C. arcuatum auctorum) - today, Fauna Europaea: -- thereīs no arcuatum -- C. festivum (no synonyms) Can anyone help? I understand nothing Thanks in advance |

The nomenclature of arcuatum is highly disputable. I will send you a document (Speight, M.C.D., 2008. Species accounts of European Syrphidae (Diptera) 2008. In: Speight, M.C.D., Castella, E., Sarthou, J.-P. and Monteil, C. (eds.) Syrph the Net, the database of European Syrphidae, vol. 55, 262 pp., Syrph the Net publications, Dublin) in which is explained why the name 'arcuatum' can better be ignored in the future. Following Van Veen means for the Spanish checklist that festivum there is called arcuatum. And that arcuatum in the checklist is called fasciatum. If you identify a specimen as arcuatum in Van Veen, the document I sent you suggests to use the name fasciatum for that species. Both Van Veen and Speight et al agree on using festivum for the species that keyes out with vernale). Fauna Europaea is terrible when it comes to synonyms. Did this help you? |

uf, itīs somehow a tongue-taxon-twister; as arcuatum and festivum are separated from the first point of the keys because of the antennae it was strange for me. Well, itīs worse than I expected, but a very good help Thanks again, Andre |
