Hello, I wonder if I could trouble people for some ideas on what this might be: Large photo available on Flickr here: http://farm3.stat...50df_o.jpg I found several of these on the end of a large fallen rotting tree trunk in the middle of a boggy field. They kept running in and out of the cracks in the wood. It clearly has rudimentary wings and long antennae. 1~2mm (tiny!) Initial thoughts were that it might be a psocid, but it seems more like a fly to me, which is why I'm posting here. Jonathan Michaelson Flickr: http://www.flickr...chirpy_uk/ |

I would imagine some kind of gall midge (Cecidomyiidae). I take it you are from the UK?

Thank you Jorge. I did look at Cecidomyiidae and wondered. Do you think that this one is genuinely brachypterous? Jonathan Michaelson Flickr: http://www.flickr...chirpy_uk/ |

If it ventures into cracks and crevices it may well be.

Subfamily Lestremiinae, tribe Micromyini has several possible candidates. It might be Aprionus. You probably did not collect it?

Thank you Paul. I'm afraid I did not collect it. I went back the other day to look for it again but they weren't there.
