Stubbs & Falk (1983, British hoverflies), don't say much:

"There is a median process, the aedeagus, flanked by paired parts referred to as lobes (or slender processes called parameres)."

There might be more in the latest edition (2002?) but I don't have it to hand.

I don't recall any source that shows drawings of its genitalia. Perhaps you would be the first to do so? I will try to look for more info...

I'm not surprised at all Smile I will take a photo of male genitalia, but I need some guidance in writing text which will follow that picture...

In your country, Ante Vujic is the leading Syrphidae specialist. Maybe he has time and energy to help you?
You can send me a pm in case you don't already have his emailaddress and such.

Ante Vujic is professor at my Department Smile but he is not my mentor, S. Radenkovic is. I will ask her for some help, but I was hoping to find information by myself Sad I can't believe that there is no pic. or text about male genitalia on the internet...so sad! We have to do something to change that...

Please... the internet is not a holy medium... Wink

P.S.: it is not a weakness to ask your mentor for directions and help! He or she is ONE of all the sources you can use. Just ask the right questions, that really show what you want to know and why.

That is not a reason why I didn't ask my mentor, but that is another topic, so... Thanks for helping me...

The second edition of British Hoverflies, Stubbs, Falk et al. 2002, does give more detail, including a page of diagrams (Plate A) explaining the parts of a Cheilosia genital capsule. Do you have access to the book? I don't have a scanner.

There is a figure of the male genitalia of Meliscaeva cinctella in the following work:
Vockeroth, J.R. 1969. A revision of the genera of the Syrphini (Diptera: Syrphidae). - Memoirs of the Entomological Society of Canada 62: 1-176.

Maybe you already saw it, but I can confirm now (since I bought it): Acta Entomologica Fennica 25 shows the genitalia of Meliscaeva auricollis, M. cinctellus, Episyrphus balteatus and many more Syrphini Cool
