Hello,

I photographed this ~7mm fly in july near a small water near Cologne. In the gallery I found Beris vallata which seems to fit rather well. Is this correct? Or are there similar species?

Thanks,
Michael

Yellow abdomen, hind tibia half black distally = vallata, in Britain at least; I don't know about Germany.

Early orange-abdomened Beris tend to clavipes, later ones tend to be vallata, so that would also fit.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
