I think this is Sciomyzidae, it reminds me of a Tetanocera I posted a while back, though I don't think it's the same sp. Can anyone help?

11/7/2009; Devon, England

Thanks

Not Sciomyzidae, there are too many dc on scutum (only 2 post dc for Sciomyzidae). This is Opomyza petrei/germinationis (Opomyzidae).

Hi Tim,

Do you have other pictures of this fly, preferably from the side, giving a better view on the abdomen? If so, it might be possible to tell with which of the two (O. petrei or O. germinationis) you are dealing. My guess would be O. germinationis.
Another way to know you are not dealing with Sciomyzidae is the fact that the pvt (bristles just behind the ocelli) are missing. In Sciomyzidae these bristles are present.

This is definitely a male of Opomyza germinationis. Nice picutures by the way.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
