Took this at the weekend thanks for Vivtor who ID them for me

Is it rare to catch them mating?www.bolterandchainsword.com/uploads/1246236704/med_gallery_7335_3756_20028.jpg

These are the hoverfly Merodon equestris and this species come in several colour morphs that mimic different species of bumblebees. The two on the picture are both of the form bulborum.
The larvae live in th bulbous roots of various species of the onion family, Alliaceae, and allied families.
They should also live in the Syrphid part of the forum where someone will move this thread =)
cheers,
Viktor

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
