This appeared so different to the usual Helophilus pendulus I assumed it would something different - Parhelophilus? However after trying to key it out I'm still confused as to what it is. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol
