In the list we have: Dolichopus costalis 17 Frey, 1915 [39,61] Dolichopus diadema Haliday, 1832 [61,39] Dolichopus discifer Stannius, 1831 [39,61] = D. nigricornis auct. nec. Meigen, 1824 Dolichopus discimanus Wahlberg, 1851 [39,61] Dolichopus fraterculus Zett., 1843 [39,61] When there will be corrections my data will be renamed too. The other this is the gallery of this site. There seems to be pictures with both names. Maybe someone should do something to make clear, that we are talking abouth sama species. Jari

(1831), we should not use recent catalogs and checklists as their majority follow Becker and Parent monographs, giving no comments. Only British and some other checklists follow Collin (1940) opinion and use discifer as valid name. I do not know latest discussions on those names. Ulrich (2004) uses the name as nigricornis Meigen sensu Parent. Parent (1925) did not confirm synonymy because he studied non-type material of Meigen in Paris, while Meigen described nigricornis from Megerle collection that should be deposited in Vienna. By the way, I have compared original descriptions of Dolichopus patellatus Meigen, 1824: Syst.Beschr. 4: 86 (nec Fallen, 1823) and Dolichopus nigricornis Meigen, 1824: Syst.Beschr. 4: 82. Dolichopus patellatus Meigen (considered now synonym of Dolichopus discifer Stannius, 1831) was described by Meigen with fore tarsus long and thin, yellow, with the last segment scutiform, black; whereas Dolichopus nigricornis (male) was described with fore tarsus red-yellow, with brownish apex (i.e. simple on default). So, I support the use of discifer and I support also some opinions on that the name nigricornis belongs to an unrecognized species of either Dolichopus or Hercostomus. Nevertheless, everybody may use any name he wishes before an official nomenclatural act will be published (e.g., designation of lectotype or neotype for the nigricornis). I do not see the need in long discussion on this name). Regards, Igor Grichanov

Member Location: Helsinki, Finland Posts: 1999 Joined: 02.09.04	Just a brief comment on the two preapical setae on the hind femur: this seems to be a development anomaly. I dont recall seing a Dolichopus specimen with a doubled seta like that. When 2-3 setae are present in the normal way, they are well separated and positioned in a row on the anterior surface. See for example Dolichopus ungulatus in the gallery. Kahis
