I think it's Phaonia subfuscinervis, but without certitude.

Thank you Stephane,
I don't have that on my Checklist, only 3 species have been recorded in Shetland..P.consobrina, P.incana and P.palpata. But as I've already had P.errans ID'd by yourself, then the list has already been shown to be incomplete. Do any of the above named, fit the profile of this fly?
Regards Roger

It is not unlikely at all that you can have P. subfuscinervis in Shetland. See the distribution in Fauna Europaea ! I hesitated with P. consobrina, a related species, but the frons seems to broad to be this species. Anyway, I can't be sure without exact chaetotaxy of legs and thorax.

I come back to this one, I am now convinced that it is Phaonia consobrina. The frons would be broader for P. subfuscinervis. I have examined a similar one sent by Roger.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
