Hi! How can a blackfly be determined? Should I dissect genitals? Dorsal or side-view is important? Thanks! NE Hungary, April, in forest.

This should be Simulium (Simulium) based on the shape of the gonostylus: longer than gonocoxite and "with apex broadly rounded and flattened paddle-like" (vs. narrowly rounded or truncate). This based on the revision of North American Simuliidae, which offers character states to justify monophyly of holarctic genera, subgenera, and species groups that are present in North America. If the white spots are "stripes" it is in the ornatum species group. Most species of subgenus Simulium have unmarked scutum. |
