 Unusual Fly from Mescalero Sands, New Mexico

In the beautiful sand hills of New Mexico, where Prairie Chickens were dancing their mating dance, came this interesting fly. Can someone offer me some ID guidance?

I'd put my money on Asilidae, there is an inderntation in between the eyes, typical for Asilids and not present in Therevids. John |

This is clearly an asilid fly. Eric Fisher ID it to the genus Laphystia. It is a male. Martin Martin Hauser |
