I'm keying out a small metallic Calliphorid and am stuck at one couplet:
Is the middle of the proepisternal depression bare or setose in this fly?

EDIT: Identified by Dr. Terry Whitworth; subject title changed to species name

Thanks, next step:
16 May 2008, NB Canada. Length 8mm.
Is this a Lucilia sp.?
Using Whitworth 2006: it has these character states:
1] Basal section of stem vein bare above
2] Middle of proepisternal depression setose, body shining metallic blue green
3] Thorax and abdomen shining green, blue or bronze; lower calypter bare above .. Lucilia

Then:
1] Subcostal sclerite on venter of wing with pubescence only (no wiry black setulae)
2] Palpi orange
3] 2 postsutural acrostichal setae
4] Basicosta yellow or orange
.......... coeruleviridis southern, reaching Maryland
...........clavia. as far north as North Carolina

I'm hundreds of Kms north of Maryland and probably 1000 Km north of North Carolina

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
