Syrphus species. If it has hairy eyes it could well be S torvus, which appears to be the most frequent early spring Syrphus.

Nigel is right, that it is certainly not ribesii (dark base of hind femur!). But it could also be vitripennis. The overall appearance of the fly doesn't help in this group. The crucial characters are usually not visble from fotos: microtrichia of 2nd basal cell of wing, shape of probasisternum, etc. Cheers, Dieter |
