Dear forum,

I took this picture today of this very little fly (appr. 3 mm) which sat on the wall of my house.
Is Scatopsidae correct and can it be further identified?

Best regards, Niek

I wonder if you are right, Phil. Colobostema should have the scutum almost as broad as long and it appears to be much longer than broad. Usually the wings appear to be infusctae. Moreover, the angle in which vein R4+5 meets the costa and the fact that it remains removed form the costa for a long distance seem to suggest Scatopse to me, most likely S. notata. Also the yellowish markings on the thorax and base iof the abdomen are found in that species (I cannot recall having seen that in Colobostema).

You're right, it's Scatopse notata...I'm gonna shut up in future ! (Or at least rely less on my memory).

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
