Hello,

Date of observation: 17/05/2023
Saint-Chamas (France - Bouches-du-Rhône)

Size: approx. 18 mm.

The following points were noted (using binoculars if necessary):
- Legs single-coloured black; palps black with black bristles.
- Antennal segment 3 with a long, pointed, hook-shaped dorsal tooth pointing forwards and sprinkled with silver.
- Wings smoky.
- Pale yellow spoons fringed with light brown.

With these few details and the photos attached, is it possible to decide between anthracinus or ater?

Thank you for your comments
Thiery

So, based on the first pic, it seems obvious it should be anthracinus male, but I think the pic is deceiving.
The second pic shows both dark beard and darkened calypter, both indicating ater.
And in the second pic, contrary to the first pic, the wing seems uniformly darkened.

So, in the end, D. ater male seems to me very likely.

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
