Each year in mid to end of August this smallish, 5-6mm, fly, with a characteristic, unusual, exceptionally long, broad, folding, extendable mouthpart/proboscis, comes to nectar on perennial sunflowers (Helianthus multiflorus) in my garden. These images are from 16rh August 2019. In 2021 I saw it for the first time on the 24th Aug. even though the Helianthus has been blossoming for several weeks. Is there a special name for this type of proboscis? Flensburg, N. Germany. Many Thanks in advance. Ray Ray Perry attached the following image: [268.17Kb] Edited by Ray Perry on 27-08-2021 09:28 |
