Is this Brachicoma devia? It was noticeably smaller than the common Sarcophaga sp. flies that I see at this site. Seen on 09/06/2021 in the margin of a commercial strawberry field in Kent, UK.

Many thanks,
Dylan

Most small black Sarcophagidae like this that I catch here in Reading turn out to be Sarcophaga dissimilis.

Oh ok, thanks! I didn't realise there were Sarcophaga species that could be that dark.

could this fly be the same species? There were several of them on the wing yesterday near a small brook (northwest Germany). They were only about 5 mm in size and seemed to be much darker than other Sarcophagas.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
