Not sure what to make of this calyptrate fly. Any help with narrowing down the ID would be much appreciated. Seen on 09/06/2021 in the margin of a commercial strawberry field in Kent, UK.

Many thanks,
Dylan

Wow, I never would have guessed that! I knew the females looked different to the males, but I didn't realise just how different they are. There's no way I would have guessed they belong to the same species.

Many thanks,
Dylan

Hello,

are you sure? Does not look much like a female Musca autumnalis to me, more like a Tachinid. Look at the sharper kink in the M vein.

Thanks for your help so far! Having had a look through the Tachinidae gallery, I'm now wondering whether it might be Cyzenis albicans? I appreciate that it may not be possible to tell for sure though from this photo.

Many thanks,
Dylan

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
