Hello, This Asilinae was found on the edge of a lake surrounded by forests at an altitude of 1935m. It looks like a Stilpnogaster but has black legs. Maybe it is a Machimus without pruina on the abdomen? Could it be a species not yet described? I have only 1 picture. Hi, Stilpnogaster aemula indeed. Quite typical are the white apical margins on the tergites. Sometimes the red on the legs can be very dark, nearing black, as is the case in your specimen. Best, Jonne |

Hello, This female was identified by Xavier Lair as Stilpnogaster mussoi Lair & Lauriaut. It is a new species to science, described in the book he co-authored with C. Lauriaut, J.-M. Maldès, and B. Nabholz (https://r-a-r-e.fr/wp-content/uploads/2 ... ilidae.jpg), published a few days ago by the A.R.E. (Association roussillonnaise d'entomologie). It is endemic to the Carlit Massif in the Pyrenees, straddling the Pyrénées-Orientales and Ariège departments. The book, currently available only in print, offers significant revisions to the Asilidae of France. The species Stilpnogaster mussoi is mentioned in this summary: https://r-a-r-e.fr/wp-content/uploads/2 ... ilidae.gif. Edited by DedeLab on 01-04-2026 12:51 André LABETAA |
