Hello, I photographed this fly in the Gennargentu Mountains, Sardinia (NU), Italy, 1820m a.s.l. on May 13th 2025. I think it is a Bibio, but is it possible to identify its species based on these photos? I think it's a male B. varipes (I've compared reticulatus, varipes and johannis, maybe there's another resembling species in Italy?)
Greetings, Eric |

Italy is tricky, but I dont seenehybit couldnt be johannis ... varipes seems quite unlikely to me. Legs much too orange Theo |

Thank you both very much! Considering the species reported for Sardinia in the new Checklist of Italian Fauna, the best option seems to be B. johannis. Is there any particular feature that excludes it here? |

I (still a beginner) have excluded B. johannis because of the completely black femora (FIII should have a pale or even yellowish base?) and I thought I see a pale halter in the first image. But these characters may be variable and I could only find one single male johannis to date in a bad condition.
Greetings, Eric |

Leg colouration in johannis is notoriously unreliable. Femora can be red, black, or in between Theo |

Thank you again for the clarifications. I will archive these photos as B. johannis, but with a "cf.", just in case. |
