Dear all,

I came across this very small larva today in my garden (near Erlangen, Germany, close to a pine/fir forest and some orchards). It feeds on aphids which feed on Silene dioica. Can anyone identify this larva? It is about 3 mm long. I guess this is Cecidomyiidae, right?

Thank you and best regards,

Antje

If it has many setae besides papillae on body segments - then it may be Monobremia subterranea Kieffer, 1913. If no - then Aphidoletes. Both are predators in aphid colonies.Smile

Cool, thank you so much, Cranefly, that helps! Grin Here's a closeup, do you think this qualifies as "many setae"? I'm not sure just how hairy it's supposed to be. Cool

I see here setae on the apices of papillae only. So, it seems to be Aphidoletes aphidimyzaCool
