Xanthochlorus tenellus or Xanthochlorus ornatus?

Photos 12-7-2018, Bergen, The Netherlands. In the ivy against the wall.

On https://www.dipte...Europe.pdf page 117
Thorax almost entirely yellow, more or less darkened only on prescutellar
depression; scutellum usually entirely yellow; 2.5-3.5 .. tenellus Wiedemann
– Disc of thorax and scutellum darkened, entirely greenish or bronze, dusted
grayish; 2.75-3.0..................................................................ornatus Haliday

Despite this information, I am not sure about the species.
I've already asked on the Dutch forum: https://forum.waa...c=431358.0

I hope you know more.

Regards, Thijs

Try "Chandler & Negrobov (2008) The British species of Xanthochlorus Loew, 1857 (Diptera, Dolichopodidae), with description of two new species. Dipterists Digest (Second Series) 15, 29-40."

Using that key I suspect you have Xanthochlorus tenellus?

Thanks Mark.
You mean https://www.dipte...202008.pdf . Yes I think so, when I read
This species is very similar to X. silaceus, having a similar extent of greenish coloration on the thorax, restricted to the prescutellar area between the posterior dorsocentrals but in X. tenellus this is rather more defined and almost as distinct in the female as in the male.
But I'm still not sure.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
