Hi,

I have photographed this small grey fly on a forest pond (2021.04.22), 20km west of Paris.
Length about 4-5mm.
The face is quite different from what I use to find, ie Hydrellia sp.
What could it be?
Best regards,
FRV

Thank you very much John, with a front view is it possible to go to the genus?

The first photo appears to be a male Scatella paludum. The second is a different species (note the much narrower gena - the space between the bottom of the eye and the mouthedge). It looks as though it's a Scatella as well, but I can't say which species.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
