Hello Waldgeist,

do you have a lateral photo? this one is problematic because some of it matches a particular species but some of it doesn't match. it should be atramentaria but pediculata is also known to have a petiole. I don't see how we can specify a species without a cf.

I will say Pollenia cf atramentaria because of some inconsistencies.

Best wishes,
John

i cannot see enough to be certain that it is atramentaria so please use a cf.

i visited your page: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&subview=grid&taxon_id=133825&user_id=waldgeist&verifiable=any

you have mny vagabunda photos but one is misidentified. I do not have time to register at that site but i will do so when i have some free time. I'm in the middle of programming a bookmarking feature of my website. Anyway, i'll get around to helping you out with those Pollenia photos...

Best wishes,
John

awesome! nice to know you can code :-) i might take you up on that offer but i'll send you a pm with my email address.

Meantime, i will have to examine my microscopic photos of atramentaria and compare it with pediculata based upon what is visible in your photo. Maybe we can deduce which species it really is. I do see several matches with atramentaria. The head doesn't match though. interesting.

i actually decidded to take a few minutes to help you out. I have registered at iNaturalist (fast and easy). I started suggesting an id for some of your Pollenia photos. I don't see a way to specify male or female other than a comment. I'll try to work through your photos as much as i can right now.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
