Photographed today in the Netherlands a beautiful end well marked Nephrotoma. But is the marking well enough for an ID? |

N. appendiculata has a different pattern on the abdomen and is flying earlier in the year, so this has to be another species. With only these pictures I'm not able to tell you which one.

Ah, I should have been satisfied with the fact that I was able to recognize it as a Nephrotoma!

I too did take a deeper dive into these species. It certainly is not N. appendiculata, for the spot in the wing is black. In N. appendiculata this spot is grey. Also remarkable is the black vein running down from the spot. So I checked my animal against the 20 species living in the Netherlands. Nephrotoma aculeata abdomen darker, more black veins in the wing Nephrotoma analis No double line near the rear of the abdomen????? Nephrotoma appendiculata Grey wing spot Nephrotoma cornicina The yellow markings on the back of the head have black lines around them Nephrotoma crocata Easy species showing three yellow bands on abdomen Nephrotoma croceiventris Similar to mine Nephrotoma dorsalis The markings on the abdomen are very different Nephrotoma ferruginea Easy species: thorax and head have brown and not black markings Nephrotoma flavescens Wingspot is grey Nephrotoma flavipalpis Markings on the abdomen are much bigger Nephrotoma guestfalica Abdominal segments end in a dark line, there is no dark vein running down from the wing spot Nephrotoma lamellata ? Nephrotoma lunulicornis ? Nephrotoma pratensis Abdomen much darker Nephrotoma quadrifaria Similar to mine. Shield much darker???? Nephrotoma quadristriata No clear wing spot Nephrotoma scalaris Reverse: abdomen gets darker spots going towards the end Nephrotoma scurra No clear wing spot, thorax more yellow Nephrotoma submaculosa No double black band before the end of the abdomen. So as far as I can see there are two possible candidates: N. croceiventris and N. quadrifaria But also two species I could find reliable information about: N. lamellata and N. lunicornis. So I can't rule out those two. Anybody any further ideas? I do not have enough information on the time of year the animals are on the wing. Edited by gardensafarinl on 16-08-2013 23:40 |
