Hi

This Ephydra sp. was caught under the same conditions as the Hydrellia sp. Over dry seaweed at the sea close to Copenhagen. 12 X 2010.

Resemples closely I think the pic in the Gallery showing Ephydra riparia. Are there any alternative species to consider?

Body length some 5 mm.

Yes, there are many. Ephydra species are determined surely only by the structure of male genitalia. If you can look at the most apices of surstyli dorsally, not laterally as we see here, and if you see apex broaded and a little cut - then it is Ephydra riparia. Cool

Just like this I suppose Cool

I'll label it as Ephydra riparia, male.

Thanks for the answer and also for the one regarding the Hydrellia sp. in the other thread!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
