Hello!

Found today at -1 ?C under a piece of bark on the ground near forest (Ostwestfalen/Germany), length about 4-5 mm. Is it Chionea lutescens?

It's Chionea.

There are several species, with which I can't help you.

Great find!

Thanks, Theo! (BTW: I should have written "wingless Limoniid".)

According to "Entomofauna germanica" there are three Chionea species in Germany: C. alpica (only in Alps or other montane habitats as the name indicates??), C. belgica and C. lutescens. In my "Kosmos Insektenf?hrer" belgica is described as "dark brown" and the one on the photo there is indeed much darker than mine. So I hoped, that species and C. alpica - because of its distribution - could perhaps be excluded... Smile
Best regards,
Jürgen

Thanks! I will upload one or two (although I find, they are not so good). I think, better with a 'cf.' in the middle (or an 'sp.'?).
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hello Juergen,
I showed the picture to Oosterbroek, and he said it is Chionea belgica after all. C. lutescens has more sturdy bristles on it's legs!
Btw, the other name is Chionea alpina, not alpica!
greetings,

Many thanks! Then Paul will have to rename it, if he takes my pics to the gallery. I had uploaded them as Chionea cf. lutescens.

Btw, the other name is Chionea alpina, not alpica!

Right, I must have read too fast... Wink
Best regards,
Jürgen

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
