I saw these two specimen of Bibio sp. on the light-tower near my house in south-west of Germany on 09th may in the night. The size of the male was about 7 mm, the female about 10 mm. May ID possible? Thanks and best regards ulrich Ufo attached the following image: ![]() [177.82Kb] Edited by Ufo on 14-05-2021 20:04 |

Hi Ulrich, I'm quite sure, that the female is B. varipes (the abdomen must be yellow ventrally). Unfortunately I cannot see the colour of the hair on top of the male's thorax - if it's black, it may be the male reticulatus. Bibio are tricky and it's easier if we see dorsal and lateral views. Greetings, Eric |

Thank you, Eric! Looking at all my pictures of the male one I think the hairs on the top of the thorax actually are black. Greetings, ulrich Edited by Ufo on 14-05-2021 20:03 |
