Hello

I found yesterday this small Bibionidae on nettle in Paris.
With what I read there, can it be Bibio anglicus ? Or B. ferruginatus ?? What are the criteria ?

Thank you in advance.

Paris (75005), France - April 10th 2017
size : +/- 7 mm

B. ferruginatus is light haired. So this is anglicus indeed.
I did not except this around Paris, but recently this species is expanding.
It is very early in spring, the females are totally orange and easy to find.
So keep us posted the next 2 weeks !

Thank you Theo !

I saw other pictures from another Parisian naturalist which seem to show the female of this species (in 2016 and 2017).

Females are very often confused with hortulanus. Beware.
Specimens from April are anglicus, from May are hortulanus, with very little overlap first days of May.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
