SW France 10 days ago, by the river Lot. Body size around 10 mm long.

We are a bit confused with this hoverfly which looks like this genus, but we have'nt found one with an orange based bicoloured femur of the hind leg.

Could it be another genus ?

Thank you Helge,

I considered this option for a while, but it seems all Tropidia have the hind leg femora really swollen close to the apex.

Sorry to bother you again but some are suggesting it could be the Alder Wood Hoverfly Xylota abiens.

What do you think ?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
