This one was around 19-20 mm (body without antennae). Is it possible to ID it? I don't dare to make a suggestion.

France, Indre, La Fontouret, 28 June 2011

Thank you very much for any comments.

It is a strange animal! I think it should be Hybomitra solstitialis, known from England, France, Denmark... This taxon is maybe conspecific with common H. bimaculata. Remind this topic during the second half of July, Theo Zeegers will tell you more after his return from Armenia.

I hope Theo (Zeegers) has returned safely from Armenia and has the time to look at my mystery fly?

I'm back.

Pity the frontal pic is not so clear (next time make the same pic again with a flash !), but I'd see it is some Tabanus. The eyes are bare, are they not ?

Without good frontal picture, I'm afraid that is it (could be a very orange T. exclusus...)

Thank you Theo. I've tried to make the picture a bit better. The eyes were bare as far as I can remember. Will use the flash next time.

And another one from a different angle... although I don't think it will make much difference for the ID.

I'm not sure what was wrong with me last time.

It is clearly Tabanus tergestinus. Also fits the large size.
