Hello,

I'm working on identifying Syrphids from Finnland, and I am having particular issues identifying Cheilosia and Sphaerophoria with the keys I am using (HOVERFLIES OF NORTHWEST EUROPE, VanVeen 2010 and Tvåvingar: Blomflugor | Diptera: Syrphidae: Syrphinae, Bartsch 2009). I will only get so far through and then end up with 2-3 possible species, none of which completely agree with what features i am seeing on the fly.

Does anyone have any advice on keys that may be more specific for Nordic / Finnish hoverflies, or anything that may mention the specific different features hoverflies in this very northern area may have?

I would be very grateful! Thank you

Maybe you can find a copy of Suomen kukkakärpäset ja lähialueiden lajeja - Finnish Hoverflies and some species in adjacent countries
by Haarto, A.; Kerppola, S.

I have never seen it.

Very often I use Steven Flak's Flickr page for conformation when I have identified a specimen: https://www.flickr.com/photos/63075200@N07/collections/72157629600153789/. He often gives very useful characters for identification in his descriptions.

Regards
Leif

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
