Stratiomyiidae, I'd say Sargus, but a weird one, ask Martin Hauser.

Aha! It seems like the right family! Grin But isn't it supposed to be written Stratiomyidae (1 i)?

My book suggests S. maculatus. The description fits, except for the fact that this specimen is almost twice as long...Shock

I have commented before on my way of spelling.
I correct misspellings, whether the Code allows me or not.
I will understand you if you spell with one i, and I think you did when I wrote it with two ii.

It is Sargus maculatus (Lindner, 1936), Only known from Cyprus and Israel. It is a rare species, gratulation!
Cheers

Great! I even have the specimen! It died about an hour after I took this pictures. Grin But the book still bugs me... It says that the length of S. maculatus is 10 mm, and mine is 18. Typo?
