Hello,
We have an enquiry from a substrate manufacturer whose customer complains that this diptera (syrphid?) has allegedly hatched from a bag of potting soil. Can it be determined from the pictures? What do the larvae feed on when they have developed in potting soil?

Northwest Germany, June 2020

Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge
Thomas

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
