Hello,
is species ID of this larva possible? It looks like Microdon analis in the gallery.
Yesterday I found it under decaying wood together with some fleeing ants in Saxony in Germany.
How do these flat larvae capture their pray? They do not look very mobile. Do they wait until an ant larva appears near their mouth parts?
Thanks, Marion

How do these flat larvae capture their pray?
See the interesting article by B. Barr, 1995 in Dipterists Digest (2nd Ser.) 2: 21-36.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
