Hi, is it possible to be sure of the species from these pictures? The posterior pronotum seems to be darker on upper half comparing to lower half (but not really blakish). The last segment of the antenna appears to be shorter than the preceding segment and the femora are uniform in colour. I'm not so sure about the colour of the abdomen, it seems to be banded on some segments. Pondering on all these characteristics I would say it is Chaoborus crystallinus.

Wouldn't like to say whether this is crystallinus or obscuripes. Both can vary in colour quite a bit. Best thing is to carefully dissect the penis valves from the base of the gonocoxite. Their shape is fairly distinctive. (see figs in PM)

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
