These three Ephydridae are from a dry, relict heathland site in Shropshire, UK. I have run them through a draft key, but I am unconvinced by my determinations. I have them as Hydrellia modesta, Scatella tenuicosta (the wing spots look wrong in my specimen) and Mosillus subsultans (which is clearly wrong).

Hi Nigel No.1 is Scatella, possibly stagnalis, but I can't be sure from this photo. No.2 is Hydrellia, probably griseola, as that is the common species found in dry grassland No.3 is Philygria - one of the clear winged species (which I find rather difficult to separate with certainty - so I won't even suggest which species without seeing the specimen! ) Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |

Hi Tony, Many thanks for the helpful response. Much appreciated and I am pleased that I was on the right track (genus at least) for two of them. Best wishes Nigel Nigel Jones, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom |
