keyed to Elachiptera using the Manual of the Nearctic Diptera chloropid key. Using Sabrosky’s key to this genus appears to lead to Elachiptera formosa based on my interpretation that the scutellar tubercles are only about as long as they are wide and the the diameter of the hind femur being ~2.5 > than the diameter of the hind tibia. I could be way off so I'd appreciate some expert input into the ID.
Size: body ~3mm from photo. Found near the Potomac River
Thanks!

Chloropidae, Oscinellinae: Elachiptera ? formosa (Loew, 1863): Steve forgot to cite the two keys of Sabrosky 1948, A synopsis of the Nearctic species of Elachiptera and related genera (Diptera, Chloropidae). - Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences 38(11): 365-382 and Sabrosky & Valley 1987, A new Elachiptera from salt marshes, with redescription of E. penita and partially revised key to Nearctic Elachiptera (Diptera: Chloropidae). - Proceedings of the entomological Society of Washington 89(3): 581-586.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
