This little guy wanted a drink with me. Unfortunately he slipped on the glass and fell down into the single malt. I took it out but he drunk too much and staggered on the table while I took these photos. The wings were still wet but we see some details that could help for ID ... I hope.

He was about 3 mm long and the pics were taken in Southwestern France yesterday evening.

Similar pics on the web let me think it could be this genus.

Important details are obscured. I would think that it is a melanogaster-group species. There seem to be only a few aristal branches, but some may be glued to arista or broken... Anterior margin of wing seems to be darkened, but it may be to its wetting, as this is no seen in lateral aspect...
I would say more if I could see the fly, not only these pictures.

Thank you Jan, TumbsUp

I had another one yesterday evening, same place, and it looks more like typical melanogaster.

This time it is a male. Drosophila simulans, a member of melanogaster group.

Ah OK, thanks,

So the first one could well be a female of the same species ?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
