About 6 mm, numerous this week in a former garbage dump, Southern Limburg, NL. Always waving their wings, when walking. Ben Ben Hamers attached the following image: [110.29Kb] Edited by Ben Hamers on 31-08-2018 20:53 |

I'm tempted to suggest that this is a Stevenia (Rhinophoridae), but I'm not totally convinced. It will be interesting to hear what one of the experts has to say.

Thanks Tony, My first thought was Rhinophoridae too, until I came across Periscepsia carbonaria : https://diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thread_id=66912 Problem is, that Periscepsia in Holland seems to be restricted to the coastal area, whereas the place where I found it is as far away from the coast you can get in the Netherlands, and moreover it isn't really sandy. That certainly looks like a better match. I wouldn't worry too much about the location. In Britain it is primarily a coastal species, but it has been taken at inland sites as well.

Hi Ben, Periscepsia carbonaria is indeed OK , Limburg is a weird locality. Was it a very sandy river bank or something similar ? Theo |

No Theo, It wasn't sandy at all (anymore), allthough near the Brunssum Moor. You can find some information here : https://www.bodemzorglimburg.nl/voormalige_stortplaatsen/het_kreupelbusch I saw quite a lot of them, all walking around on covers of wells (putdeksels). Thanks for confirmation, Ben |
