All requests are from the urban area of Vienna, if not otherwise stated.

My Diptera observations (and other living forms) can be found here, and corrections or comments over there would also be appreciated.

Hi Carnifex,

Interesting Diptera finds again!. Yes, this looks like P. semivirgo. although I'd keep it at Phortica semivirgo/variegate because only males can be definitely identified by examining genitalia.

Kind regards,

Ectemnius

The identification as P. emivirgo is apparently correct. Unlike most Phortica species, this one can be determined also according to its distinctive female genitaia. If you make their preparation, you will understand the peculir name of this species... See its description.

ok, I thought the tarsal coloration and the white stripe at the eye margin were distinctive in both male and female. I will have a closer look, to find out about the meaning behind its specific epithet.

BTW, the gallery pictures of this species apparantly await a re-naming since several years now...

Well, I just dissected a female and I am quite aty loss. I do not recognize any of the structures illustrated by Jan in his description of semivirgo or of variegata illustrated in the same paper... awkward

And I failed to get hands on any publication with the female parts illustrated, only males. To the Macá 1977 revision paper I don't have access. Maybe someone reading this thread can help Cool

But has the leg coloration ever shown to be not reliable distinguishing the two?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
