I have keyed out this small (5mm), black, male fly as Dufouria chalybeata. As I have not seen this species before I would be grateful for confirmation.

On Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) flowers, grazing marsh, south Essex, England, 14 June 2017.

That is totally OK.

Here in western Europe, D. chalybeata is the only species of Dufouria I see.
I am always surprised that the old authors all knew nigrita and occlusa, I have never seen the latter and nigrita only from tropical destinations as Mongolia.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
