Hello, some years ago I stored the Chrysopilus pictures as Ch. erythrophthalmus because of the light bands on the abdomen. Now I am quite unsure. Could it also be a Ch. flaveolus or another species? Unfortunately, I can´t remember the size of the fly. Thanks, Marion The pictures were taken in the end of May 2006 in Germany, Saxony in a forest. Chrysopilus cristatus, if not that species it should be splendidus.

Thank you for correction, Paul. I am a bit puzzled. The pictures are too bad for going through the van Veen key. I assumed that the Chrysopilus auratus in this key is Chrysophilus cristatus. In the key is written for Ch. auratus: "Female: thoracic dorsum on the front part with a broad grey stripe containing a small black stripe in its middle." The thoracic dorsum of my fly looks only evenly haired. Therefore I thought, it can´t be this species. Am I wrong with the assumption Ch. cristatus = Ch. auratus? Marion |

The assumption is right, but the mesonotum is not always bare. At the front of the mesonotum you can see the start of the broad grey stripe and the narrow median black stripe.
