I saw this rather smallish (say 5 mm) fly in the Dutch coastal dunes. This is my best photograph, I hope it is good enough for an ID (or close to...) The flower it is on is Jacobaea vulgaris, which has rather small flower heads. Open dunes, with canals running through the area. Coniferous and deciduous forst never too far away. I thought it might be a Tachinidae, although the antennae are rather unimpressive...but may be that's feature only in my imagination! NO, a Miltogramminae (Sarcophagidae), but the mistake is often made. It's the genus Miltogramma itself, and given the locality (I know, this is cheating) it can only be M. germari Theo |

Thanks! I know, this is cheating I'm not sure I agree. I would say: any information that adds to an ID is valid. Of course, if the additional info is vital, the ID does not follow from the photo alone. But I'm quite content with using additional info (else, why presenting it?) I agree What I meant with cheating, is that I have a database of dutch Miltogramminae, whereas others don't. That's cheating (after hard work). Theo |
